The Santa Cruz Mountains is a unique wine growing region. It was the first region to be recognized based on appellation boundaries. What does this mean for growing grapes in the region? A lot. The region encompasses several micro climates due to the vast mountain region.
The fog has a great influence in the coastal area. This cooler climate offers great growing conditions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. You will find the vineyards in the Corralitos area and up along the HWY 1 Coast producing these varietals with an excellent outcome. Wineries along this climate line include (but not limited to): Thomas Fogarty Winery, Bonny Doon Vineyards, Alfaro Family Vineyards,Windy Oaks Estate, Nicholson Vineyards and Pleasant Valley Vineyards.
The Mountain areas contain several microclimates including those wineries on the ridges’ of the Mountains and those in the valleys. As you can imagine there is quite a difference in climate between those. The hotter climates are producing world- famous Cabernet’s, Chardonnay’s, Zinfandel’s and more. Wineries that are producing in the hotter climate include (but not limited to): Ridge Vineyards, Fellom Ranch Vineyards, Fernwood Cellars, Martin Ranch Winery, Woodside Vineyards.
These micro climates make our wine region unique compared to most. You will find most wine regions become known for one significant varietal based on their climate ie Napa Valley Cabernets. In the Santa Cruz Mountains we are proud to be producing three top varietals: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.
At the Wine Club of the Santa Cruz Mountains we are very proud to help you discover these ultra-premium wines being produced here. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
