We are now coming on the 3 year anniversary of Traci and I owning and operating the Wine Club of the Santa Cruz Mountains and it’s spurring memories of years past. We are very grateful to all of our past, present and future members and supporters.
Often I am asked “What made you think of the idea to start this club?” About 7 years ago, while working as the Director of Operations for the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association, I was out on a typical weekend day tasting wines and learning about this wonderful region. While tasting at Bonny Doon Vineyards, I found some fabulous wines and this spurred on my thought to join their wine club. This brought up a major dilemma for me. How could I join just ONE wine club in this region when I loved them all so much? Well, I thought, I could join them all….a quick glance at my bank account told me this was not an option. So the thought came to me, how can I support all of this region’s wineries in one club? I wish there was a club that included all of them. The light bulb went off! I thought how great it would be if this region could offer one. I took my idea to the former Executive Directors at SCMWA and they loved it, but had concerns about logistics. As always, my response was “it’s just logistic’s, how hard can it be?!”.
I was then given the green light to move forward and learn how I could make this club happen. As this club was the first of it’s kind, I had to research how to make it operational and legal. In no time at all I had a master plan on how to get the club up and operational. The SCMWA Board of Directors approved the plan and we started promoting the club. Year’s later, we learned that Federal laws had changed and a non-profit organization could no longer sell wine legally. While driving home that day the thought occurred to me that I could run this as a personal business. I decided I needed help. I reached out to my long time friend Traci Tompkins who is a business owner and someone I always looked up to as a mentor. She loved the idea. We pitched a plan to the SCMWA Board of Directors to purchase the wine club, and in December of 2010 we managed to put out our first shipment.
Shannon worked as the Director of Operations for the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrower’s Association for approximately 13 years. Shannon has brought wine events of all kinds to the area in an effort to excite interest in the local wines and food. She loves watching people from all over enjoying the region’s wine and witnessing the local vintners businesses grow and prosper.
